Weekend Events: May 25-27

It’s an exciting weekend in the Lowcountry as we welcome the kick-off of both the Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto festivals. It’s the time of year when Charleston becomes even more of a global destination. But remember, you too can a be tourist in your own town!

Friday, May 25

Spoleto Festival USA, one of America’s major performing arts festivals, is full of 17-days worth of events showcasing both established and emerging artists in more than 150 performances of opera, dance, theater, classical music and jazz. The festival was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who sought to establish a counterpart to the Festival dei Due Mondi (The Festival of Two Worlds) in Spoleto, Italy. It runs May 25-June 10 with events throughout downtown. spoletousa.org

Focusing primarily on artists of the Southeast region, Piccolo Spoleto is the perfect complement to the international scope of Spoleto Festival USA, its parent festival and its 700 events in 17 days transforming Charleston into an exhilarating celebration of performing, literary and visual arts. Have some fun out on Folly with Moonlight Mixers. Shag the night away under the stars at the Folly Beach Pier, where DJ Jim Bowers will be spinning the hottest oldies and beach music for you all night long. The event runs 7-11 p.m. at 101 E Arctic Ave., Folly Beach. Tickets are $8, advanced tickets, $10 at the door. ccprc.com

Saturday, May 26

For some free Piccolo Spoleto fun, check out the Outdoor Art Exhibition where 80-plus South Carolina artists will be showing and selling their work in the outdoors of Marion Square from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. spoletousa.org

Watch the exciting beginning of the Atlantic Cup race. Come to the Charleston Maritime Center or get out on the water to watch the start of the Atantic Cup as the boats head off to New York City. The race begins promptly at 12 p.m. at the Charleston Maritime Center, 10 Wharfside St., Charleston. atlanticcup.org

This Memorial Day weekend, come check out the Mount Pleasant Art Festival with Craft Marketplace. The  free event runs from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. May 26 and 7–10 p.m. May 27 at Towne Center, 1218 Belk Drive, Mount Pleasant. mtpleasanttownecentre.com

Sunday, May 27

For some family-friendly shopping fun, head out to the Flea and Farmers Market from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Celadon Warehouse, 2221 Noisette Blvd. in North Charleston. The event includes artisans, crafters, makers and farmers. Come hungry; every market will have a wide variety of food trucks, coffee and sweet treat vendors. celadonathome.com
