It’s already getting to be that time of year in Charleston when there’s so much to do that it’s difficult to choose. Luckily, we’re here to highlight some of our favorite family-friendly Lowcountry events. Have fun this weekend!
Friday, Feb. 16
Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is a three-day showcase of everything you love about wildlife and nature. It brings together people of all ages, men and women, sportsmen and conservationists, artists and artisans, fans and families. Through an incredible lineup of events – from fine art exhibits, conservation education, sporting demonstrations and parties, SEWE invites all to explore their “wild” side. If you’re looking to for an interesting way to learn more about Black History Month, Mount Pleasant Regional Library, 1133 Mathis Ferry Road will host a showing of “Follow the Drinking Gourd: A Story of the Underground Railroad,” afterwards participants (ages 5-11) can make an African drum craft. The event runs from 3-4 p.m. and it’s free.
Saturday, Feb. 17
The 10th Annual Folly Gras Parade & Block Party – Folly’s annual take on Mardi Gras – is set for this Saturday. This year’s event will feature dozens of arts, crafts and fashion vendors, live music, free kids’ activities and lots of delicious food and drink. Arnold Gottlieb’s Very Ticklish Orchestra will lead the traditional Folly Gras parade down Center Street starting at 11 a.m. Guests are encouraged to wear festive costumes and bring their beads to spread the cheer. Advanced registration is required to participate in the parade.
Festivities will continue on Center Street with live music across three stages by Soulfish, the Secrets, Eddie Bush and The Endorphin Machine, a Prince tribute band, starting at 12 p.m. A dedicated kids area will feature street performers, glittery body art, mardi-gras inspired arts and crafts, king cake musical chairs, inflatables and more. Folly’s participating restaurants and bars will be whipping up New Orleans inspired dishes and serving $5 Deep Eddy cocktails all day. Tickets for Folly Gras are $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Admission is free for full-time Folly Beach residents that have a valid ID, as well as kids 12 and younger. visitfolly.com
